Choosing a Carpet

We recommend that when choosing a carpet, you consider the type of carpet that best suits your requirements. The following questions will assist you in determining the best carpet for you.

  • How will the carpeted area be used?

  • Will there be low, moderate or heavy traffic in the area?

  • Will there be direct access onto the carpet from
    outside?

  • Will children or pets use the area?

  • How long do you expect to keep your carpet before
    you replace it?

  • How much do you want to spend on carpet?

Fibres

Carpet comes in a variety of different fibres that include:

Wool

A natural fibre, wool's popularity has stood the test of time. Its natural properties give wool a comfortable and luxurious feel, durability, resistance to staining and soiling, and ease of cleaning.

Nylon

Nylon is the most durable and stain resistant carpet fibre available, making it an excellent choice for high traffic areas, and homes with children and pets. A vast array of colours, designs and textures are available in nylon.

Solution Dyed Nylon

This fibre has all the qualities of nylon, with the addition of being colourfast, as the dye is added to the fibre during the manufacturing process.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene is stain resistant and a cheaper alternative to other types of fibres. It can be prone to crushing, especially in lighter weight products and is not flame resistant.

Blends

Blends combine two types of fibres, namely wool and polypropylene. If you like the look of wool, but want a cheaper option, then blends may suit your requirements.

Styles

Level Loop Pile

All carpet begins as a loop pile. Those that remain uncut are called a loop pile carpet.

High Low Loop Pile

This variety of loop pile has each row of yarn at alternate high and low levels, which gives a natural, linear “sisal” look.

Modulated Loop

The loops are set at two to three varying heights to achieve a textured look. Colours can look richer because of the height variation of the loop.

Plush Pile

The Plush pile is achieved by cutting densely placed loops at equal lengths, giving a smooth and level surface which is often likened to a velvety, luxurious look. Plush piles can show shading from foot traffic and vacuuming and therefore are more suitable for low traffic areas, such as bedrooms.

Twist Pile

A twist pile is achieved by twisting each piece of yarn to create a textured appearance. This is style of carpet shows minimal foot traffic compared to the plush pile.

Cut and Loop Pile

This is a multilevel loop carpet where only the tall loops are cut, giving a combination of cut and looped yarns. A vast range of patterns and textures can be achieved using this method, to suit a variety of decorating styles, from traditional to modern. This style of carpet minimises foot traffic and disguises crushing.

Berber

A very distinctive type of level loop pile carpet, Berber is generally multi-coloured and therefore assists to hide stains and marks.
